The Sibling Series – Book 1
Title: I Can Try, Even When I’m Scared
Author: Daisja Freeman
Audience: Children ages 4–7
PROJECT OVERVIEW
I am creating a children’s picture book focused on confidence, bravery, emotional growth, and sibling support.
This book is the first in a planned series called “The Sibling Series.”
The story centers on two siblings who depend on each other and use simple coping tools to face challenges. The tone is warm, loving, playful, and empowering.
MAIN CHARACTERS
The characters are inspired by my real children (reference photos will be provided).
Older Sibling
Confident, nurturing, expressive
Natural leader but gentle
Warm smile, encouraging body language
Younger Sibling
Sensitive, thoughtful, expressive
Shows fear, doubt, and growth throughout the story
Curious eyes, emotional range
Important:
The older sibling supports but does NOT rescue. The younger sibling still takes the brave step themselves.
ILLUSTRATION STYLE
I am looking for illustrations that are:
✔ Cartoon-style
✔ Colorful and inviting
✔ Warm and expressive
✔ Inclusive and joyful
✔ Age-appropriate for 4–7 year olds
Style references (descriptive):
Soft outlines
Big expressive eyes
Bright but gentle colors
Emotion-forward facial expressions
Clean backgrounds that don’t overwhelm the characters
(Think: modern children’s books you’d see at Target or Scholastic.)
ILLUSTRATION SCOPE
Approx. 24–26 full-color interior illustrations
1 front cover illustration (optional if illustrator offers covers)
1 character consistency sheet (recommended)
Each page illustration will be guided by a page-by-page layout that I will provide.
EMOTIONAL FOCUS
Illustrations should clearly show:
Nervousness
Self-doubt
Comfort
Courage
Pride
Sibling connection
This is just as important as the visuals themselves.
