About the Job: AR Collections Specialist
As an AR Collections Specialist, you will play a critical role in our revenue cycle management team. Your primary responsibility will be to collect payments from insurance companies and patients, ensuring timely resolution of outstanding claims. You will work closely with our clients, insurance payers, and internal teams to resolve accounts and meet daily productivity and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Follow up with payers to ensure timely resolution of all outstanding claims via phone, email, fax, or websites
- Utilize various workflow systems and client host systems, such as STAR, SMS, EAGLE, and EPIC, to collect payments and resolve accounts
- Demonstrate working knowledge of the insurance follow-up process, including understanding of fundamental concepts in healthcare reimbursement methodologies
- Review and update patient and financial information accurately, verifying that information is accurate as to individual or insurance company responsible for payment of bill
- Monitor all billings for accuracy, updating any that contain known errors, and ensure that hospital services are billed correctly and within expected timeframes
- Follow up with insurance companies on all assigned accounts within expected timeframes, explaining hospital regulations and maintaining complete working knowledge of insurance regulations and hospital insurance contracts
- Identify and report underpayments and denial trends, analyzing and resolving issues causing payer payment delays, and initiate appeals when necessary
- Maintain confidentiality at all times, using, protecting, and disclosing patients' protected health information (PHI) only in accordance with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) standards
Essential Qualifications:
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- Experience in hospital/facility billing, with a minimum of 2-3 years of experience in insurance collections, including submitting and following up on claims
- Ability to work well individually and in a team environment, with strong organizational, communication, and written skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Excel and Word, as well as basic math and typing skills
- High School Diploma or equivalent required, with Medical Billing and Coding certification preferred but not required
Preferred Qualifications:
While not required, the following qualifications are preferred:
- Medical Billing and Coding certification, such as CPC or CBCS
- Experience with electronic health records (EHRs) and practice management systems (PMS)
- Knowledge of ICD-9/10, CPT, and HCPC codes, as well as UB-04
- Experience with data analysis and reporting, including manipulating Excel spreadsheets and communicating results
