About the Role
As a STEPS Transition Special Education Teaching Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting students with special needs in achieving their academic, social, and emotional goals. You will work closely with licensed teachers and therapists to implement instructional plans, provide individualized support, and promote a positive learning environment. Key Responsibilities
- Implement instructional plans as determined by licensed teachers and therapists, including lesson modifications and adaptations to meet the needs of students with special needs.
- Assist students with activities to maximize participation in learning and achievement of IEP objectives, including administering curriculum-based tests and quizzes.
- Provide physical care and support to students, including diapering, toileting, feeding, and assisting with daily living skills.
- Observe, document, and reinforce appropriate student behaviors, and communicate activities to teachers and facilitators.
- Participate in weekly team meetings to review student progress, plan upcoming lessons, and participate in trainings.
- Assist with non-instructional activities, including maintaining safety, behavior, decorum, and order in common areas.
- Retrieve students from buses or cars at the start of classes and escort students to appropriate buses or cars at the end of classes when required.
- Record and update student progress toward achievement of individual educational plans.
Essential Qualifications
- A valid Educator License with Stipulations (PARA), Substitute License, or Professional Educator License.
- Experience working with students with special needs, preferably in a STEPS Transition setting.
- Ability to read, write, and speak English sufficient to communicate with students and staff.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide, and perform basic arithmetic operations as needed to assist students.
- Ability to understand, apply, and use personal computers and software applications, including Word, Excel, and other technology-based programs.
- Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals and is sensitive to individual differences.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of information regarding students, employees, and others.
- Ability to establish a supportive and compassionate relationship with students with special needs.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff, and others contacted in the course of work.
- Ability to maintain composure in stressful situations and adapt in response to changing conditions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Special Education or a related field.
- Experience working with students with severe disabilities or complex needs.
- Knowledge of adaptive equipment and technology-based programs.
- Ability to communicate in a second language.
