Location: Remote / USA
Company: APEX Cybernetics
Type: Part-Time
APEX Cybernetics is building the next generation of affordable humanoid robots for real-world applications. We are looking for a Mechanical Product Design Engineer who is passionate about robotics, skilled in product design, and comfortable diving deep into open-source humanoid platforms to reverse-engineer, improve, and innovate.
Role Overview
You will lead the mechanical design for our humanoid robot platform—covering structural design, joints, linkages, materials, fabrication methods, and manufacturability. You’ll analyze open-source humanoid robot designs, extract insights, and create improved, cost-efficient, high-performance mechanical architectures.
Responsibilities
• Design and develop mechanical systems for a humanoid robot (torso, arms, legs, joints, frames).
• Study open-source humanoid robot models (e.g., Jimmy, Unitree open platforms, etc.) and perform reverse engineering to extract design patterns.
• Rapidly prototype and iterate structural components.
• Create detailed 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, and simulation analyses.
• Optimize designs for low cost, manufacturability, and durability.
• Select materials, actuators, bearings, transmission elements, and mechanical components.
• Collaborate closely with electrical, control, and software teams to ensure seamless integration.
• Work with manufacturing/OEM vendors for production-ready designs.
• Support assembly, testing, and continuous improvement.
Requirements
• Bachelor’s or Master’s in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, or related field.
• Strong experience in 3D CAD (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Onshape, or similar).
• Experience designing robotics hardware—preferably humanoids, robotic arms, actuators, or complex mechanisms.
• Ability to analyze and reverse-engineer open-source robotics designs.
• Knowledge of materials, kinematics, linkages, mechanical transmissions, and actuator integration.
• Understanding of manufacturing processes (CNC, sheet metal, plastics, carbon fiber, aluminum alloys, etc.).
• Strong problem-solving and rapid prototyping skills.
Bonus Skills
• Experience with harmonic drives, cycloidal drives, gearboxes, or actuator design.
• Familiarity with ROS, embedded systems, and control theory.
• Hands-on experience building robots from scratch.
• Knowledge of FEA, motion simulation, and stress analysis tools.
What We Offer
• Opportunity to design a humanoid robot from the ground up.
• Work with an ambitious startup on cutting-edge robotics.
• Flexible work environment.
• High impact, fast-paced engineering culture.
