We are seeking an experienced scientific writer with a strong journalism background to develop high-quality, evidence-based articles in the healthcare and health policy space. Ideal candidates have published work in Scientific American and/or comparable outlets (e.g., STAT, Undark, The Atlantic, Nature, Science, The Conversation, Kaiser Health News, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Guardian, BMJ opinion/features, etc.).
Scope of Work
Depending on fit and availability, assignments may include:
Reported or semi-reported feature articles in healthcare/health policy
Explainers and evidence-based analysis pieces (peer-reviewed literature + credible data sources)
Executive summaries and brief policy-focused articles for professional audiences
Light ghostwriting support for op-eds or thought leadership (as needed)
Responsibilities
Produce clear, accurate, and engaging healthcare writing for a general-to-professional audience
Conduct fast, rigorous research using peer-reviewed literature and credible sources
Translate complex scientific/clinical concepts into accessible language
Fact-check thoroughly and provide citations/links to sources
Incorporate edits efficiently and meet deadlines reliably
Required Qualifications
Demonstrated experience writing about healthcare, medicine, public health, or health policy
Strong journalistic writing and storytelling ability
Excellent research and synthesis skills (ability to work with academic literature)
Ability to write in a voice appropriate for major media/professional outlets
Comfortable working with feedback and revisions
Strongly Preferred
Publication history in Scientific American (preferred) or similar reputable outlets
Experience interviewing SMEs (clinicians, administrators, researchers)
Familiarity with health systems, health administration, or policy topics
Ability to turn around drafts on short timelines when needed
Deliverables (examples)
800–1,500 word article drafts (with sources)
600–1,000 word explainers (with citations)
Optional: interview questions and short summaries of expert interviews
