Job Overview
As a Nutrition Service Assistant at Duluth Public Schools, you will work under the supervision of the Site Manager and receive direction from cooks. Your primary responsibilities will include assisting in the preparation and serving of food items, maintaining proper sanitary conditions in preparation and serving areas, and supporting the Site Manager in tracking meals and food records. Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the preparation of meals, including setting up for service, preparing food items, and maintaining a clean and organized kitchen environment.
- Maintain proper sanitary conditions in food preparation and serving areas, adhering to health and safety standards.
- Operate the cash register and food service computer to track meals and food records, ensuring accuracy and efficiency.
- Support the Site Manager in managing inventory, ordering supplies, and performing other administrative tasks as needed.
- Develop positive relationships with students, staff, and parents, providing excellent customer service and responding to inquiries and concerns in a professional manner.
- Collaborate with other nutrition service staff to ensure seamless service delivery, sharing knowledge and best practices to continuously improve our services.
Essential Qualifications
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- Physical ability to handle large quantities of food and perform tasks that require standing, lifting, and bending.
- Freedom from contagious disease, ensuring the health and safety of our students and staff.
- A combination of education and experience that may be accepted as equivalent by the Food Service Department, demonstrating your ability to learn and adapt in a fast-paced environment.
- Previous experience in the preparation, handling, and serving of large quantities of food is desirable, although we are willing to train the right candidate.
- Knowledge of methods for preparing, cooking, and serving foods in large quantities, as well as simple record-keeping and accounting principles.
- Ability to get along with and handle children, maintaining a patient and supportive demeanor in a busy school environment.
- Basic computer operations skills, including proficiency in operating a cash register and food service computer.
