Key Responsibilities:
- Provide expert sign language interpretation and communication facilitation services to students, teachers, and staff in various educational settings, including classrooms, meetings, and events.
- Collaborate with teachers and other support staff to develop and implement individualized communication plans that meet the unique needs of students with hearing impairments or communication challenges.
- Interpret and transliterate for students in real-time, ensuring that they have equal access to educational content, activities, and services.
- Provide support and training to teachers and staff on effective communication strategies and techniques for working with students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
- Participate in staff development activities and training sessions to stay current on best practices in sign language interpretation and communication facilitation.
- Maintain accurate records of interpretation and transliteration services provided, including logs of services rendered and communication plans developed.
Requirements:
Essential Qualifications:
- Be a qualified sign language interpreter or qualified transliterator under the Sign Language Interpreter and Transliterator Registration Act (63 P.S. § § 1725.1-1725.12) and its implementing regulations.
- Provide evidence of a minimum of 20 hours of staff development activities relating to interpreting or transliterating services annually.
- Possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with students, teachers, and staff.
- Be able to work independently and as part of a team, with a strong commitment to providing high-quality services.
- Have a strong understanding of educational settings and the needs of students with hearing impairments or communication challenges.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in a related field, such as education, communication disorders, or American Sign Language (ASL).
- Experience working in educational settings, preferably with students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
- Certification in ASL or sign language interpretation, such as the Certified Deaf Interpreter (CDI) or the Certified Hearing Interpreter (CHI).
- Experience with communication facilitation and transliteration services.
